Boosting Readiness: Key Trends and Interventions from a State-Wide National Guard ACFT Analysis

The NHARNG 2024 ACFT Analysis offers valuable insights into soldier performance and readiness while highlighting areas for improvement. By identifying key trends and providing targeted interventions, the SiteWell Solutions Human Performance (HP) Team ensures that soldiers are equipped to meet the physical demands of their roles. Here’s a breakdown of the findings and how they’re being addressed:

Soldiers who passed the 2-mile run were significantly more likely to also pass SDC (80%), plank (87.5%), power throw (50%), with no failures in the deadlift or pushups.

1. 2-Mile Run as a Success Predictor

Trend: Soldiers who passed the 2-mile run were significantly more likely to pass other ACFT events. The data shows:

  • 80% of these soldiers also passed the Sprint-Drag-Carry (SDC).
  • 87.5% passed the plank.
  • 50% passed the power throw.
  • No failures were recorded in the deadlift or pushups.

Intervention: To enhance 2-mile run performance, the SiteWell Solutions HP Team offers customized running programs tailored to individual needs. Soldiers can also participate in the seasonal Run Club led by SCCs, designed to build endurance and improve overall ACFT scores. Self-guided, app-based cardiovascular training programs are available to improve state-wide reach and accessibility to support.

50% of soldiers who failed the ball throw did not fail any other ACFT events. Failures are likely attributed to technique deficits.

Permanent Profile and Modified 2-Mile Run Challenges

Trend: Soldiers on permanent profiles face unique challenges, with 50% failing their modified 2-mile event.

Intervention: Personalized support, including one-on-one guidance from SWS Dietitians and Strength and Conditioning (S&C) Coaches is game changing for performance improvement. This tailored approach helps soldiers meet their specific fitness goals, even with modifications driven by medical limitations. Establishing continuity between guard medical providers and the HP team allows for soldiers to improve recovery outlook and adjust to the demands of modified events.

50% of soldiers on permanent profiles failed their modification event for the 2-mile test.

Standing Power Throw (SPT) Technique Deficits

Trend: A notable 50% of soldiers who failed the power throw did not fail any other events. This trend suggests that technique, rather than fitness, is the primary issue.

Intervention: To address this, the SWS team  offers “SPT Technique Workshops” for individuals and units. These workshops focus on improving form and maximizing performance in this event. ACFT biomechanics lessons can be provided in turf talks and offer a brief intervention for major results. Strength and Conditioning Coaches are also readily available to develop app-based programming that enhances strength and power.

On average, soldiers who failed the height, weight, and tape standards exceeded the weight limit by 46% pounds.

Weight Management Challenges

Trend: Soldiers failing the height, weight, and tape standards exceeded the weight limit by an average of 46 pounds.

Intervention: SWS developed the Healthy Weight Management program in 2023. It is available fully on demand through the SWS app. This program focuses on sustainable health practices, providing soldiers (and family members) with the tools to achieve and maintain their weight and fitness goals.

Conclusion

The NHARNG 2024 ACFT Analysis underscores the importance of targeted interventions to improve soldier readiness. By addressing key trends—from endurance and weight management to technique refinement and personalized support—the SiteWell Solutions Human Performance Team empowers soldiers to perform at their best.
