Supporting mission readiness requires more than a one-size-fits-all approach. Embedding Strength and Conditioning Coaches and Tactical Performance Dietitians directly into wellness divisions has proven to increase access, improve ACFT outcomes, reduce preventable injuries, and foster stronger buy-in across units.
Based on SiteWell Solutions’ experience supporting the NH National Guard SWIFT program, here are several best practices for successful integration of performance specialists.
One of the most valuable assets of any wellness provider is availability. National Guard schedules are dynamic—providers must adapt by offering sessions before duty hours, after hours, and on drill weekends to meet the needs of both full-time and traditional service members.
Consistent visibility—showing up, staying flexible, and offering services in-person—builds rapport and ensures members know where to go for support.
Top-down communication is essential, but not always sufficient. Wellness providers can amplify their reach by:
Face-to-face interaction still wins. Showing up in person makes it easier to connect and follow up with individuals one-on-one.
The best providers build trust before delivering advice. Instead of leading with credentials, start by listening. Ask about a soldier’s training history, hobbies, or goals. Whether they’re new to fitness or have decades of experience, that context helps tailor support effectively.
Tip: The more you understand someone’s background, the easier it is to deliver personalized interventions that stick.
Encouraging soldiers to engage across services (e.g., dietitian and strength coach) creates a more cohesive wellness experience. When performance providers collaborate and support each other’s outreach, it builds trust and reinforces the Guard’s holistic health message.
This also helps build momentum across units—especially during busy drill weekends or annual readiness events.
Integrating human performance specialists within National Guard wellness efforts has far-reaching impact when done with intention. By prioritizing availability, direct communication, personal rapport, and team-based collaboration, units can see measurable gains in readiness and resilience.
These same strategies apply in other high-risk, high-performance settings—from construction to healthcare to fire service. When people trust their provider, they use the service—and that’s when performance starts to change.
