At SiteWell Solutions, we understand the importance of human performance, especially for our tactical forces communities. We are pleased to share key takeaways from the 2024 Human Performance Course with our partners in holistic health and fitness, the New Hampshire National Guard. This two-week immersive course was designed to equip soldiers with the skills and knowledge to enhance their overall health and fitness, driving improved mission readiness, reducing the risk of injury, and improving Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) outcomes.
The course offered a blend of interactive health education sessions and fitness sessions. The ultimate goal is to provide participants with comprehensive wellness resources that are actionable and impactful in their busy lives.
Participants engaged in daily physical training led by SiteWell Solutions’ Strength and Conditioning Coaches. These sessions were complemented by educational briefs from our Performance Dietitian and covered a range of topics essential for optimizing human performance.
A standout session for soldiers' benefit was the introduction to the Pose running method. Soldiers, and many other tactical athletes, require solid baselines of cardiovascular conditioning. Due to this occupational physical demand, lower leg injuries due to improper technique and training are a major concern for the military.
The Pose running method improves efficiency and reduces injury through proper biomechanics. It emphasizes a forefoot strike, slight forward lean, quick foot pull, and proper posture. Key aspects include maintaining balance, higher cadence with shorter strides, and muscle activation, especially in the core and lower legs. This method aims to enhance energy efficiency, prevent injuries, and improve overall running performance by fostering a strong mind-body connection and awareness of running form. After integrating this technique, all participants improved run times during their second ACFT attempt.
Additional sessions included:
Injury prevention was a critical concern for the 2024 Human Performance Course. Soldiers were likely to be exposed to significantly more physical activity than they are accustomed to. To mitigate injury and overtraining risks, SiteWell’s Strength and Conditioning Coaches led regular recovery-focused sessions. Recovery sessions included foam rolling, trigger point therapy, tissue smashing, and mobility training. Our Performance Dietitian reinforced these efforts to ensure the dietary needs of all Soldiers were sufficient for their high levels of activity.
Service members underwent pre-and post-body composition tests, as well as pre- and post-ACFTs , to measure their progress throughout the camp. These assessments provided valuable insights into their physical improvements and areas needing further development.
The 2024 Human Performance Course was a resounding success, providing service members with the tools and knowledge to elevate their performance. At SiteWell Solutions, we are committed to supporting our service members with evidence-based strategies to enhance their holistic health and fitness.
