Workplace Wellness Toolkit Men’s Health Month

Workplace Wellness Toolkit Men’s Health Month

03 June 2021

June marks Men’s Health Month. This international observance is hosted by Men’s Health Network and has been serving to raise awareness around discrepancies in men’s health since 1992. Why the annual rally-cry?

  • Currently, men are dying an average of 5 years younger than women and lead 9 out of 10 of the top causes of death.
  • Men do not see physicians for a physical exam nearly as often as women and men are more likely to be uninsured than women.
  • Men have a higher suicide death rate than women. Men account for 92% of fatal workplace injuries.
  • With healthy lifestyle choices and regular medical care, men can drastically improve the quality and quantity of the lifespans.

SiteWell Solutions wants to help your workforce honor this observance in a way that makes a difference in the lives of your male team members and their loved ones. Here are 3 ways you go beyond raising awareness and make an impact on the health and wellness of your workforce.

I. Addressing Illness with a Company-Wide PSA

Addressing Illness with a Company-Wide PSAWhen you are sick, take time off, see your doctor, make a speedy recovery and return to work. Seems simple, right? Not
for most men. Men are less likely to visit their physicians or even take sick leave than their female counterparts. Men’s health month is the perfect time for a Public Service Announcement from leadership designed to undo this pattern. Stating for the record that your organization supports the proper use of sick leave (and then practicing what you preach) is critical for fostering an organizational culture that promotes speedy recoveries over prolonging an illness and exposing others.

II. Men’s Health Milestones, Actionable Advice

Start a dialogue about the routine health checks recommended for men as they age. Information on these health milestones is widely available online, though be sure to select a good source such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Opening a dialogue around the pressing need for colon cancer screenings, depression evaluations, prostate cancer and other conditions plaguing men is great start. Take this a step further and work with your insurance company or local providers to directly connect male employees to the services needed. This connection can be in the form of provider guidance as well as scheduling resources. Routine services such as blood pressure screenings, cholesterol checks and diabetes screenings can be brought onsite to benefit your entire workforce.

III. Make the Most of Men’s Health Week

Make the Most of Men’s Health WeekInternational Men’s Health Week kicks off in June. Double down on awareness this week with onsite flyers or digital promotional content. Bring in guest speakers to discuss topics outlined above. Host a healthy luncheon with a health education twist. Spotlight foods with more calcium, vitamin D, fiber, potassium and cancer-fighting lycopene (all of which men need more of as they age). Encourage the whole office to wear blue on Friday to show their support.
